How to remember to take your supplements
Updated 18 September 2026
Tie each dose to something you already do at that time, and use a method that shows whether you already took it. A pill organizer, a phone alarm, the Health app on iPhone and a supplement app all work. They differ in three things: whether they remind you, whether they record the dose, and whether they warn you before a bottle runs out.
- 01
A pill organizer
A box with a compartment per day, or per day and time. You fill it once a week, and an empty compartment tells you that dose is done. It does not remind you. It does not know a bottle is running low either: you find out on refill day. It suits a few capsules a day better than powders or sachets.
- 02
A phone alarm
A repeating alarm, one per time of day. Free, and on every phone. It reminds you, and forgets the moment you dismiss it: there is no record of whether you took anything, and no link between the alarm and the bottle.
- 03
The Health app on iPhone
Health has a Medications section that also takes vitamins and supplements. You set a schedule, it reminds you to log each dose, and it can remind you again 30 minutes later. You log each one as taken or skipped, and you can export the list as a PDF. It is free and already on the phone. Apple’s guide does not describe counting what is left in the bottle or warning you before it runs out, and there is no Android version.
- 04
An app made for supplements
It reminds you, records the dose with a tap and keeps count of each bottle. That is what Supli does: a reminder at dose time with a Taken button, one tap to mark, and a warning days before a bottle runs out. It works without an account and everything stays on the phone. Android beta now, iPhone soon.
The four, side by side
Six criteria, the ones that decide whether a method still works with five bottles and three times a day.
| Pill organizer | Phone alarm | Apple Health | Supli | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reminds you at dose time | No | Yes | Yes, and again after 30 min | Yes, and again after 15, 30 or 60 min |
| Shows you already took it | Yes, the compartment is empty | No | Yes, taken or skipped | Yes, the row is marked |
| Warns before a bottle runs out | No, you see it on refill day | No | Not in Apple’s guide | Yes, as many days ahead as you choose |
| Powders, sachets and drops | Capsules fit, powders do not | Anything | Yes | Yes, in grams, scoops, ml or drops |
| Works on | Anywhere | Any phone | iPhone and Apple Watch, not Android | Android beta, iPhone soon |
| Cost | A one-off purchase | Free | Free, comes with the iPhone | Free during the beta |

Whatever you pick, anchor it
The reminder is half of it. The other half is taking it at a moment that already exists in your day: when you get up, at lunch, before bed. If the label says to take it with food, the meal is the anchor.
Several supplements at the same time are one moment, not five reminders. Group them, and the method you chose only has to work three times a day instead of eight.
“Did I already take it?”
It is the doubt that comes up most in the threads where people ask about this, and remembering harder does not fix it. Leaving a trace does: an empty compartment, a line in a log, a tick in an app.
If there is no trace and you are not sure, the label or a pharmacist can tell you what to do. A reminder app cannot, and Supli does not try.
Questions
- I can’t remember if I took my vitamins. What can I do?
- Check whatever records it: the compartment in the organizer, the log in your app. If nothing records it, the label or a pharmacist can tell you what to do about that dose. From then on, use a method that shows it at a glance.
- Does the iPhone have a pill reminder?
- Yes. The Health app has a Medications section where you add medications, vitamins and supplements with a schedule. It reminds you to log each one and can remind you again 30 minutes later.
- How do I set a supplement reminder on my phone?
- On iPhone: Health, Browse, Medications, Add a Medication, then set the schedule. On any phone, a repeating alarm works, one per time of day. In Supli you add the supplement and its time, and the reminder arrives with a Taken button.
- What is the best app to remember to take supplements?
- For medication, the apps built for it, like Medisafe or MyTherapy. For supplements, one that also counts the bottle. Supli reminds you at dose time, marks with a tap and warns you before each bottle runs out. No account, no ads.
